# Chase Furman

## Artist Statement

Human identity is a dynamic equilibrium of opposing forces, a mix of emotional fluidity and structured boundary. I construct abstract expressionist portraits that translate the distinct energies, moods, and nuances of human personality into visual form.
To honor this human connection, each painting bears a human name anchoring non-objective compositions to a specific presence and inviting an empathetic dialogue between the viewer and the canvas.
Visually, my process balances energetic, heavily textured mark-making with deliberate geometric structure. This visual tension mirrors the inherent contrast of human nature. Spontaneous, felt emotion is met by the structured frameworks we inhabit. Through rich impasto, bold contouring, and intuitive color choices, each piece manifests a singular, living identity.

## Biography

Art began not only in a traditional classroom, but in the vibrant, creative ecosystem of skateboarding where graphic design, film, and fashion intersect. My passion for painting was sparked by the documentary Beautiful Losers and the expressive work of surf/skate artist Thomas Campbell. A subsequent encounter with monumental Abstract Expressionism at the Art Gallery of Ontario, alongside a deep study of the CoBrA movement, which shifted my early figurative work toward a more expressionistic style.
