## Artist Statement

Rodney Band's work explores the relationship between material and form. Each piece begins with the natural structure of the wood—its grain, voids, and irregularities—elements he chooses to reveal rather than conceal. Through turning and carving, he creates forms that move beyond function into sculptural expression. The process is intuitive and responsive, guided by the material at every stage. His practice is defined by scale, balance, and surface. Recent work introduces textural carving and brass details, creating a dialogue between organic material and refined intervention.

## Biography

Born in South Africa in 1955, Rodney Band grew up in Israel, where he completed his schooling and military service before returning to South Africa. He began working with wood at the age of 16, hollowing logs by hand. Thirty-five years ago, he discovered the lathe, which became central to his practice. His work focuses on large, sculptural bowls formed from richly textured woods such as wild olive root and African blackwood. Sourcing material primarily from tree fellers, he allows the inherent character of the wood to guide each piece. Over time, his work has evolved toward more sculptural forms, incorporating surface texturing and brass elements. His process is both physical and precise, using a lathe, bowl gouge, and custom-modified tools. Rodney has exhibited with Ebony Curated, Southern Guild, and AITY Gallery. He was selected by the DTI to exhibit at Maison & Objet in Paris and collaborates with leading interior studios including ARRCC, OKHA, and Black Pearl. His work has recently been accepted for auction at Strauss & Co.
