# Call for VisArts' Gibbs Street Resident Artists 2026-2027

## About This Program

VisArts invites applications from local, national, and international professional artists for one of two six-month residencies at studios in Rockville, Maryland. Studio space (169 sq ft, private, with sink, Wi-Fi, and abundant natural light) is provided free of charge. Artists receive a $3,000 stipend ($500/month). Residencies culminate in a solo exhibition. Artists working in all media are welcome, though hazardous materials requiring special ventilation are not supported. Residents maintain a recommended minimum of 28 hours/week in the studio, participate in monthly Studio Artist Program meetings, attend opening receptions and artist talks, and present a public event and open studio during their residency.

## Eligibility & Requirements

- **Disciplines:** painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, interdisciplinary
- **Age Requirements:** 18+ years old
- **Note:** Professional individual artists or collaborative artist teams over the age of 18. Students and commercial artists are not eligible. VisArts cannot provide visa assistance for international artists. Artists working in all media are welcome except those requiring hazardous materials with specific ventilation requirements.

### Additional Requirements

Up to 10 images of work produced during the last four years (can include time-based media up to 10 minutes total; 2 minutes of video/film/sound/performance equals one work). For collaborative teams: 10 images of collaborative work plus a statement on the collaborative nature of the work. Image specs: .jpg, .tiff, .png, or .gif; minimum 1920x1080px; max 5MB per image; files labeled as 'firstname lastname-title-number.ext'. Numbered list of works (artist name, title, year, dimensions). Resume/CV. Artist bio (200 words max, third-person paragraph highlighting professional achievements). Artist statement (100 words max). Contact information for two references who can address your work as an artist. Residency proposal describing goals for the residency and community engagement plans (250 words max; optional drawing or representative images). Preferred residency dates (first and second choice).

## Compensation & Benefits

$3,000 stipend ($500/month) + free studio space

$500/month for the 6-month residency period. Studio space (169 sq ft) provided free of charge. Artist must provide own studio furniture.
