# Three Outdoor Sculpture Opportunities

**Hosted by:** Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee

**Type:** Public art | **Location:** Greenspon Campus for Jewish Life | Klingenstein Jewish Center, Sarasota, FL, United States | **Deadline:** November 15, 2026

## About This Program

> "History of the Holocaust and post-Holocaust stories of survivors"

### Three Opportunities for Artists

The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, in Sarasota, Florida, is building an outdoor installation of art and history about the Holocaust. Three new commissions are planned.

Professional artists or teams with experience in outdoor installations are invited to apply to create original sculpture on the themes of Resistance During the Holocaust, Resilience of Survivors Post War, and a photography-based Multi-Generations of Survivors.

A small panel of art experts will review submissions. Design honorariums are available for site specific concept creation and a design contract will be executed for full design development of commissioned conceptual designs. Budgets range from approximately $100,000 to $200,000.

### Site Information About This Project

### Site #1: Resistance

Resistance to dehumanization, deportations, murder and the Nazi's program to eliminate all Jews, Jewish communities and culture took many forms. Armed resistance such as the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising took place in many ghettos and a few camps. For Jews in these places to make art, preserve history, hide children, write poetry, create a network of soup kitchens, write newsletters, were also forms of resistance as they risked their lives.

Art: A moderate size sculpture or relief panel(s) that expresses the spirit of resistance to be installed on a wide, paved, shaded plaza.

### Site #2: Resilience of Survivors

This location begins the post-war narrative and seeks to convey the combination of resilience and psychic and physical damage of trauma that characterized survivors of the Holocaust who persevered to rebuild their lives.

Art: A free standing, frontal sculpture tall enough to be clearly visible from across the pond. Site is a landscaped space approximately 18' wide and 8' deep between the paver path and border fence. Landscaping may be altered to accommodate art design. Seven-branch menorah as symbol of Jewish continuity can be used. Do not use the six-pointed star.

### Site #3: Multi-Generations of Survivors

The intent of the photo-based piece is to convey the determination of the survivors to rebuild their lives in America and Israel; that each life saved is connected to their descendants – the many people living today in our communities. The inclusion of images and/or names of family members who did not survive will also remind us of the millions of individuals who are missing from our world who would have been the descendants of the six million.

Art: A free-standing, frontal design that incorporates multi-generations of family photos of survivors and their descendants in America along with photos (if available) or names of family members who died in the Holocaust.

Site is a 7' deep "bump out" of the main path, up to 26' wide. Staff will provide research and photos from local survivor community. Photos must be digitally transferred to permanent material using a permanent process that will not fade.

### About the Site and Narrative

The complete project will be a series of art and historical installations along a 900 foot long, landscaped path (which has been built) surrounding a pond on the Jewish Federation campus. The adjacent parking lot will be masked by plantings.

Artwork will not be roped off. CHMEC is a daylight installation. It will be lit for security and safety, but the installation will not be visited after dark.
