# TartAMI Residence Open Call 2027 January – December

**Hosted by:** TartAMI

**Type:** Residency | **Location:** Fujitatami Guesthouse, Izumi City, Osaka, Japan | **Deadline:** November 30, 2026

## About This Program

> "Tatami material, traditional Japanese craftsmanship, and cross-cultural exchange"

TartAMI Residence is an artist-in-residence program run by TartAMI (Fujise Co., Ltd.), rooted in Japanese tatami culture, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary artistic practice.

Located in Izumi City, Osaka, close to Kansai International Airport (KIX), the residence offers a quiet, lived-in environment where artists can explore tatami as both a traditional material and a contemporary artistic medium.

Artists are invited to engage with tatami through artistic practice, material research, experimentation, and cross-cultural exchange. The program welcomes artists interested in exploring the material, learning about traditional craftsmanship, developing new work, or reflecting on the cultural and social contexts of tatami.

Situated next to an active tatami workshop, the residence provides opportunities to encounter the everyday processes of traditional craftsmanship and to engage with the local environment.

Both short-term exploratory stays and longer periods of focused production are welcome. Artists are encouraged to shape their residency according to their own interests, working methods, and project goals.

### Duration of residency

・Minimum stay: 1 week
・Longer stays are welcome, subject to availability.

Short-term stays are suitable for material research, experimentation, initial project development, and exploring the cultural context of tatami.

Longer stays offer more time for intensive production, developing projects, and preparing exhibitions or presentations.

The residency period and working arrangements can be discussed according to each artist's interests and project goals.

### Accommodation

Artists stay at Fujitatami Guesthouse, a renovated 60-year-old Japanese house located next to an active tatami workshop.

- Shared accommodation is generally available for short-term stays.
- Private rooms are primarily intended for stays of one month or longer. Shorter private stays of two weeks or more may be considered depending on availability.
- Traditional tatami flooring and futon bedding.
- Shared kitchen and dining space.
- A quiet residential neighborhood with opportunities for interaction with the local community.

Shared accommodation is arranged to allow some personal space, with two beds positioned at opposite ends of the room and a shared area in between. Room arrangements are organized by gender.

The guesthouse offers an opportunity to experience everyday life in Japan while staying close to the materials and craftsmanship central to the residency.

### Disciplines, work equipment and assistance

TartAMI Residence welcomes artists and practitioners from all disciplines, including but not limited to:

- Visual arts
- Installation
- Craft
- Design
- Performance
- Sound
- Research-based practices

Artists from other disciplines are also welcome, particularly those interested in material exploration, traditional craftsmanship, cultural exchange, or the relationship between art and everyday life. Previous experience working with tatami is not required.

- Used tatami mats and leftovers are provided free of charge as materials for artistic creation.
- Basic tools and workspace support are available.
- Artists should bring or independently source any specialized tools or additional materials required for their projects.

The residency encourages experimentation with tatami as a material, object, and cultural concept. Artists are welcome to explore its physical properties, traditional uses, and potential reinterpretations through their own practices.

### Studio / Workspace

The studio is located within the same facility as the guesthouse and also functions as a small gallery.

Studio use is shared and may vary depending on events and other activities. The adjacent tatami workshop is an active production space that artists may observe during working hours.

Artists staying for one month or longer are welcome to use the gallery space to organize and present their own solo exhibition, subject to prior arrangement and space availability. Artists are responsible for planning, installing, and managing their exhibitions.

TartAMI is happy to support exhibition promotion and other aspects of the presentation where possible, although the extent of support may vary depending on available resources. Artists should be prepared to take the lead in organizing and promoting their exhibitions.

Artists planning projects that require specialized equipment, large installations, or extended access to the studio are encouraged to discuss their needs in advance.
