Artist books are consensually understood as an object that takes the shape or the dynamics of a book, and is made by an artist. There are many ways to conceive a book, and given the multidisciplinary features of Aviário Studio, it is possible to pursue very distinct paths. We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation and research; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work. The duration, focus and outcome of the residency is defined by the participating artist's goals. Workshops are equipped for book binding, printmaking, screen printing, digital work, analog photography and darkroom, painting and drawing, wood, metal, plastic and ceramics. At the studio there will always be at least one person to assist and advise artists about techniques, equipment, materials and suppliers. Project discussion at the beginning of the residency and a final discussion/open studio at the end. ## Eligibility & Requirements - **Career Stage:** Emerging artist, Mid-career, Established - **Geographic Eligibility:** International - **Disciplines:** artist book, bookbinding, printmaking, screen printing, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography, woodworking, metalwork, metalworking - **Note:** Equipment can be used based on demonstrated experience, or after joining paid beginner training. Will you bring a partner?), Choose your residency (Self-directed Residency, Guided Art Residency or Assisted Production Residency), Brief description of your project, Online portfolio or 5-6 pictures of your work. ## Compensation & Benefits No compensation; artist pays a residency fee (2 weeks 600 € to 6 weeks 1800 €) which includes accommodation in a shared house, studio access and project discussion. No grants available. Residency Fee includes: accommodation in a shared house, studio access during opening hours (Mon.-Fri. from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.), access to the workshops and equipment according to each participant experience, project discussion. 2 weeks – 600 €; 3 weeks – 900 €; 4 weeks – 1200 €; 5 weeks – 1500 €; 6 weeks – 1800 €. Materials and meals not included. A precise quotation is given after application. Studio Support (training or assistance) is 20€ per hour. At the moment we do not have any grant available, but we encourage artists to apply for external financial support. To secure your place, you will need to pay 50% of the fee; the remainder is due upon arrival. ## What's Provided - **Housing:** Provided - You are free to decide if you want to stay at Aviário Studio's accommodations or search for a place on your own. Aviário Studio has a guest house in the center of Ferreira do Zêzere and 2 km away from the studio (20min walk). If you decide to stay at Aviário Studio's accommodations, you will be living in a shared house. The house is on the ground floor, and has one living room, an equipped kitchen, one bathroom, one toilet, three bedrooms, and outside space. There is free wi-fi at the house. All residents are responsible for their own bed-making, and for maintaining a clean and quiet house environment. - **Studio Access:** Provided - Aviário Studio is a creative playground in the countryside, right in the middle of Portugal. The building is a renovated aviary immersed in nature and just 2 km away from Ferreira do Zêzere town, and 6 km away from the river Zêzere. The studios are a set of workshops, with common spaces and individual workspaces: 1 common area with kitchen and 3 toilets (one adapted for people with reduced mobility); 1 room for the development of projects with irregular dimensions and/or materials; 4 workshops (2 equipped to work image: screen printing, printmaking, digital work, drawing and bookbinding; 2 equipped to work object: wood, metal and ceramics); large area of outside space.
