Set in three historic buildings on the edge of open fields, Haihatus combines the peace of the Finnish countryside with an active and unconventional art environment. Here, you live and work surrounded by art. Across approximately 1,500 m², Haihatus offers studios, workshops, exhibition and performance spaces, an outdoor sculpture park and unexpected spaces shaped by artists over the years. The art centre hosts summer exhibition which attracts thousands of visitors annually. Throughout the year local artists and residency artists may hold, concerts, performances and workshops. The residency gives you freedom to use this environment in your own way. There is no requirement to produce a finished work: you can develop an existing practice, begin something new, research, write, experiment or simply give yourself uninterrupted time to think and work. You are welcome to work independently during your stay. If you have something you would like to share with others, there may sometimes be a chance to organise a small exhibition, performance, screening, workshop or artist talk. This depends on what is happening at Haihatus at the time, and would be discussed separately. The summer exhibitions have a separate open call for artists. Follow Haihatus on social media or check our website if you are interested in applying. Life at Haihatus moves between privacy and community. You have your own room and space to withdraw, while shared kitchens, studios, meals and sauna create natural opportunities to meet other artists. Step outside and you are surrounded by fields, forests and lakes, while the everyday services of Joutsa remain within walking distance. In summer, Haihatus expands into a lively art destination with its annual contemporary art exhibition, vegan summer café and Art Camping. Residency season takes place from February to April. Summer time you can come to visit as an Art Camping and exhibition quest, and stay over surrounded by art. ### Duration of residency Residencies range from one to three months. For this open call, you can apply for a period between February and April 2027. If you wish shorter stay outside the residency program, we have some rooms available in Airbnb, have a look! ### Accommodation Residents live in Utopia House, Haihatus' main residency building and the social heart of the community. You have your own private single or double room with a small kitchenette, while the fully equipped kitchen, living areas, bathrooms, sauna, laundry facilities and large garden are shared. Life at Utopia offers both sides of a residency: privacy when you want to focus and an easy way to meet other artists when you want company. Shared meals, conversations and sauna often become a natural part of everyday life. And yes, there is a resident cat. ### Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Haihatus is open to visual artists, writers, performers, musicians, researchers and other artists.
