Description
The Skull Madonna explores the tension between humanity's greatest opposing forces: peace and war, life and death, hope and despair. The Madonna figure, an enduring symbol of motherhood, compassion, and the sacred act of giving life, cradles a dove of peace, while the red heart signifies love, harmony, and our shared capacity for healing. Beneath this nurturing presence, her robe depicts a landscape of destruction and skulls—a stark reminder of the devastation wrought by conflict. These represent death, bloodshed, desolation, and the profound human cost of war. The work's title echoes the tradition of “memento mori”, acknowledging the inevitability of mortality while emphasising the precious fragility of life. This little sculpture offers hope: a vision in which goodness ultimately overcomes evil, and healing prevails over despair. The Madonna's delicate veil is a metaphor for both vulnerability and resilience. Though seemingly fragile, it falls gently over the chaos below, suggesting that peace is not an absence of suffering, but a quiet, protective force capable of transcending destruction. The figure also evokes Mother Earth herself—an ultimate life-giver who continues to nurture despite humanity's capacity for violence. Material choices reinforce these ideas. The elements representing peace are glazed and include gold lustre, lending them a luminous, sacred quality, while the areas symbolising war remain unglazed, their raw surface emphasising loss, barrenness, and ruin. On the reverse of the sculpture, I have included a sketch from my original brainstorming process, revealing the conceptual journey that led to the final work and inviting the viewer into the evolution of its symbolism.
