A contemporary painter exploring memory, emotion, perception, and the ways painting becomes a space
Wu Ke is a Chinese contemporary artist based in Helsinki, Finland, and a graduate of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Working primarily with oil painting, she explores memory, emotion, perception, and the inner world through colour, abstract form, and intuitive mark-making. Her practice reflects an ongoing interest in the relationship between inner experience and the way reality is perceived. Wu Ke has maintained a sustained artistic practice for over two decades. Her work has been exhibited in China and presented internationally through publications, collections, and art-market platforms. Her work was featured in Chinese Oil Painting in 2011, with four full-page presentations, and her second monograph, Wu Ke: Intentional Oil Paintings, was published by Tianjin People’s Fine Arts Publishing House in 2012. Her works are held in collections in France and by private collectors, and have achieved documented results at Chinese art auctions. In May 2021, her oil paintings Declaration of a Different Realm and 漫No.6 each sold for RMB 69,000 at the Beijing Yubao Jiahe International Auction. In October 2021, Afternoon Tea with Idols sold for RMB 74,750 at the Hanhai Autumn Art Auction. In May 2023, 漫No.9 sold for RMB 95,000 at the Guofu Fude 2023 Spring Art Auction. These auction records are documented in Artron’s auction database. Wu Ke’s intuitive approach leaves her work open to individual interpretation, inviting viewers to engage with her art through their own memories, emotions, and lived experiences.
Born 1979 in Yibin Shi, China
My painting practice explores the relationship between colour, abstract form, perception, memory, lived experience, and the inner world. Working primarily with oil paint, I do not begin with a fully predetermined image or narrative. Instead, forms emerge through an intuitive process of layering, erasure, accumulation, and return. I respond to what appears on the surface, allowing colour, gesture, texture, and organic forms to develop, transform, and sometimes disappear. I am particularly interested in the moment when a form approaches recognition without becoming fixed. A shape may suggest a face, body, animal, fragment of nature, or something unfamiliar. My paintings move between abstraction and recognition, allowing images to emerge, dissolve, and reappear through the act of looking. Colour plays a fundamental role in this process. I use colour not simply to describe or embellish form, but to construct a perceptual space in which forms and visual associations can shift. Through contrasts of colour, rhythm, density, transparency, and movement, I seek to create vitality while keeping the image open between external perception and inner imagery. This openness also extends to the viewer. I do not impose a fixed meaning on the emerging forms. Instead, the work creates space for viewers to encounter it through their own memories, emotions, cultural experiences, and lived histories. Different viewers may perceive different images and associations; these differences are part of the work's unfolding. I describe this approach as a Self-verifying Artistic Practice: meaning is not predetermined by the artist, but emerges through the viewer's encounter with the work. Ultimately, I am interested in what happens before an image becomes certain—when seeing remains an active process of searching, recognising, and imagining.
