The African American Museum Dallas preserves and celebrates the heritage and achievements of African Americans through art, artifacts and historical archives. Founded in 1974 by educator and museum leader Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr. it is the only institution of its kind in the Southwestern United States, and it holds one of the nation's most extensive collections of African American art. Based in Fair Park, the museum presents exhibitions, lectures, public programs and special events. It also offers educational programs, field trips and tours, memberships, volunteer opportunities and event rentals. Its biennial Carroll Harris Simms National Black Art Competition and Exhibition helps build the permanent collection and gives Black artists a place to show their work.
