The Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA) represents, supports and advances the creative work of individuals, organizations and agencies throughout Alaska. It was established in 1966 to foster the development of the arts for all Alaskans through education, partnerships, grants and services. The Council has 11 members appointed by the Governor, with consideration given to geographical balance. The board is meant to be broadly representative of performing, visual and fine arts. The Governor designates the chair and vice-chair, who serve at the Governor's pleasure. The Council exists to enrich the cultural life of the state, encourage excellence in the arts, provide opportunities for every Alaskan to experience the arts, and guide the development of the arts statewide. It provides technical assistance and services to artists, arts organizations and arts supporters, and its members serve on panels that award grants to arts programs. Funding comes from the Alaska State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
