Barzakh is a multi-genre journal with an internationalist stance, seeking work that transcends genre. It emerged from the English department at the University at Albany, SUNY, and focuses on innovative and experimental poetry and prose as well as socially engaged art. The name comes from an Arabic concept for a connecting link, a "between" that can be read as an isthmus. The journal uses it to link languages, histories and cultures through the interplay of text, sound and image. It keeps an archive that brings together past and present departmental projects and connects them to similar ventures elsewhere. It is supported by the University at Albany's English Department and collaborates with the New York State Writers Institute.
