City Rising is a social impact studio rooted in the traditions of social practice art, a creative, community-centered approach to improving conditions in specific communities. It treats research, policymaking, community development and community repair as creative, humanizing work grounded in justice, collaboration and joy. The studio researches, designs, launches and evaluates projects that help people and communities recognize and use their capacity for change. It also investigates the root causes of social harm, makes policy recommendations, and supports community-facing organizations and leaders in adopting asset-based, justice-oriented practices. Its work includes creating tools for others to build social impact, hosting workshops and learning series on topics such as collective impact and ecosystem thinking, and running arts-involved projects such as Beyond These Gates, which uses poetry, storytelling and video art to explore the former Indiana Women's Prison.
