Est-Nord-Est (ENE) is an artist-run centre that gives an international community of artists and authors in contemporary art space and time for research and experimentation. It also offers them privileged access to local resources and knowhow. The centre is in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, a village on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, surrounded by farms, forests and the river. It began as a meeting point between sculptors with contemporary practices and those using regional traditional skills. It now welcomes professional visual artists from all disciplines, both established and emerging. Eight-week residencies bring together four artists and one author and run in spring, summer, fall and winter. They take place in a building designed and built for residencies, where exchange, friendly relations and technical and logistical help are central to the experience.
