The French Academy in Rome, based at Villa Medici, was founded more than 350 years ago. It is at once an artists' residency, an arts center with a varied programme of exhibitions, festivals, concerts and symposia, and a heritage site open to visitors. Each year it runs an international competition to select resident fellows, who spend twelve months in Rome on projects of creation, experimentation and research. It also offers several themed residencies, in partnership with institutions such as the CNRS, the INHA and the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, covering visual arts, art history, crafts, research and virtual reality. The Renaissance villa hosts contemporary art exhibitions and concerts, and guided visits take people through its history and gardens.
