A Portland partnership turning discarded waste into art through a juried artist program.
GLEAN is a Portland, Oregon partnership between Recology Oregon Recovery Inc., the regional government agency Metro, and the environmental arts nonprofit ReClaim It. Founded in 2010, the organization runs a juried program that gives five selected artists each year access to the Metro Central transfer station to glean discarded materials for new artwork. Its mission is to prompt reflection on consumption habits and waste through creative reuse, drawing inspiration from Recology San Francisco's Artist in Residence program. Participating artists receive a stipend, studio visits, and group critiques, with the program culminating each summer in a public exhibition of the resulting work.
