The James Merrill House is a writer-in-residence program based in the former Stonington, Connecticut home of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet James Merrill. Since 1995 it has hosted over 100 writers who live and work in the house to complete projects of literary or academic merit, and it shares their writing with the community through free lectures and readings. The 1901 building at 107 Water Street is a National Historic Landmark, left by Merrill to the Stonington Village Improvement Association when he died. The organization also keeps the poet's legacy alive through its events, newsletters, recorded online programs and the Stonington Literary Festival, which marks the centennial of Merrill's birth in October 2026.
