Maine College of Art & Design is a degree-granting art and design college in the Portland Arts District, serving students since 1882. It prepares students for artistic excellence, creative entrepreneurship and civic engagement within an intimate and demanding educational environment, and holds that an artist's life is centered on studio practice. It offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art, a Master of Arts in Teaching, online graduate certificates, and the Salt Graduate Certificate in Documentary Studies. Undergraduate areas of study include animation and game art, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, sculpture, and textile and fashion design. The college also runs Continuing Studies for adults and youth and a Pre-College program for high school students. Its Institute of Contemporary Art presents exhibitions and fosters dialogue on contemporary visual art, and a visiting artist series and public events bring the wider community to campus.
