The Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing (MVICW) was founded on the belief that a supportive, creative and nourishing community is essential for a successful writing life. Its Summer Writers' Conference gives writers at all stages of their careers the chance to reconnect with their practice and build a network of fellow writers. The institute teaches compassion rather than competition and offers tools for working with the inner critic. It is dedicated to promoting voices from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, increasing philanthropic support for writers and enriching the literary landscape of Martha's Vineyard. Every year it offers fellowships to writers of color, parent-writers, educators, caregivers and LGBTQIA+ writers. It also provides free writing exercises and other resources for writers. Attendees credit it with helping them finish novels and poetry collections, win awards and grants, gain admission to MFA programs and open bookstores, presses and literary spaces in their hometowns.
