City of Newcastle's art museum holding a permanent collection of 7,000 works.
Newcastle Art Gallery is proudly owned and operated by City of Newcastle, with a deep commitment to supporting the arts and cultural enrichment. Its permanent collection of 7,000 works celebrates past and present, showcasing local artists of the Hunter region alongside artists of international impact. The gallery traces its origins to philanthropist Dr Roland Pope's 1945 bequest of his private collection, and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. In 2025 the gallery reopened following a major expansion that more than doubled its size, adding a café, shop, and multi-purpose and educational spaces.
