The Society of West-Coast Artists was established in 1939 to encourage and promote artists through art education and to bring the fine artist and the public into closer relationship. It was originally founded in Chicago with many chapters, and the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley chapters are its remaining legacy. Today it pursues its mission through juried member exhibitions, demonstrations, workshops and other community support, and it is run entirely by volunteers.
Members of either chapter belong to the whole society and can earn a signature membership by gaining points through acceptance into member shows. Each chapter holds free monthly artist demonstrations open to the public and offers workshops led by nationally recognized artists. The society also holds an annual international online juried exhibition, the Pacific Artistry Showcase, open to all artists.
