The Hearst Foundations fund cultural institutions that offer meaningful programs in the arts and sciences, prioritizing those that enable engagement by young people and create a lasting and measurable impact. The Foundations also fund select programs nurturing and developing artistic talent. Supported organizations include arts schools, ballets, museums, operas, performing arts centers, symphonies and theaters.
In the recent past, 25% of total funding has been allocated to Culture. Organizations with budgets over $10 million have received 60% of the funding in Culture.
The Hearst Foundations are only able to fund approximately 25% of all grant requests, of which about 80% is directed to prior grantees and about 20% is targeted toward new grantees.
Grants of $100,000 or more to qualifying cultural nonprofit institutions.
The Hearst Foundations DO NOT FUND organizations that are based outside of the United States, operating with audited expenses less than $2 million, undergoing leadership transitions or with new leadership in place for less than one year, or not registered as 501(c)(3) organizations (an IRS determination letter is required to receive funding). The Foundations DO NOT FUND proposals seeking funding for festivals, tours, conferences, workshops or seminars; radio, film or television production; publications, books, magazines or newspapers; advocacy or public policy research; special events, tickets, tables or advertising for fundraising events; seed money or pilot programs; established programs lacking demonstrable long-term impact on populations served; program-related investments; scholarship or fellowship recipients studying or residing outside of the United States; or capital projects that are less than 50% towards the fundraising goal. In limited cases the Foundations fund endowment grants (with an existing endowment and track record with the Foundations), faith-based organizations whose services are inclusive, organizations without regional/national support or grants of $100,000 and above, and local chapters of national organizations (the Foundations typically fund at the national/headquarters level).
