TartAMI combines tatami and art, using old, well-worn tatami mats as canvases for what it calls a truly Japanese traditional art. The project grew out of a family of tatami makers who want to keep tatami culture alive by giving it a new use. Its residency, the TartAMI Residence Osaka at the Fujitatami Guesthouse, is described as the only artist residency in Japan where artists can experience tatami art. Residents stay in a traditional Japanese house in Izumi, south of Osaka and close to Kansai International Airport, in a private or shared room. Stays run from one to three months, with shared kitchen, laundry, work and gallery spaces, and free old tatami mats for use as canvases. The organization also presents works and past exhibitions and runs an online shop.
