Open Call: Land of Myths (Cities by the Sea – Reimagine the Mediterranean)

This year's theme, "Land of Myths," calls for speculative, critical and poetic responses to the living mythologies of the Greek world, its coasts and mountains, its islands and archipelagos, its layered histories and ever-shifting ecological realities. We invite practices that approach the Mediterranean not only as a sea, but as a mythic engine, a crossroads of stories, a threshold between worlds where transformation is always underway. Sea-as-interface: liquid borders, maritime imaginaries and coastal futures shaped by mythology.

We welcome artists, thinkers, researchers and hybrid practitioners to engage with the Aegean and the Mediterranean sea as a mythscape in motion, a fluid archive of memory, a post-geographic portal where ancient narratives echo into emerging futures. Set in the coastal city of Kavala, where the continental edge meets the restless waters of the Pelago, the residency offers a site where the land of Greece folds into its own sea-born imagination. Relational aesthetics, interspecies thinking and eco-somatic practices inspired by Greek landscapes and creatures.

This year's residency is self-guided and unsupervised, with no formal curation, offering you space to work at your own pace and the freedom to shape your time on your own terms. There is no schedule but the one you bring, no program but the one you summon. Think of it as a mythic retreat, an invitation to immerse yourself in your practice while moving through the rhythms, textures and atmospheres of a Mediterranean vacation.

We seek to host critical and experimental projects across visual arts, media arts, performance, painting, sound, writing, architecture, design, photography, film, collage, new media and hybrid practices. Located in the heart of Kavala providing easy access to urban inspiration, nearby beaches, local galleries and cultural networks, Nekubi Art Residency emphasizes contemporary art and a slow living lifestyle. The residency program offers: shared working studio space; accommodation (optional); exhibition space; optional exhibition event at the end of the program (exhibited creations with bar and DJ's or acts + networking and promotional material for the final event).

Artist materials are not provided, except for basic studio infrastructure such as easels, a drawing bench, sound system and projection equipment.
