What happens when a classic work of art meets a bold contemporary eye? Riverviews Artspace invites artists to put their own “modern twist” on the past. Select a specific work by any of the "greats" of art history, created in 1935 or earlier, and ask what it might say, mean, or look like if it were made today. Enter into dialogue with art history, and let that conversation shape something new, and entirely yours.

Source Period: 1935 or earlier, any work of art from the canon of art history. Open to: All artists (18+), all media considered. What We're Looking For: A clear source — each submission must be inspired by or in direct dialogue with a specific work by a recognized historical artist created in 1935 or earlier. A contemporary point of view — your reinterpretation should be unmistakably of our time, in subject, material, concept, or approach.

Artistic bravery — we welcome all media. Whether you paint, sculpt, photograph, collage, or work digitally, bring your most original thinking. A brief artist statement naming the source work, the original artist, and your creative intentions.
