Centro Cultural Casa Hechale welcomes applications for its Artist Residency in Mexico City, offering two- and four-week stays for artists developing work in theatre, performance, writing and interdisciplinary practice. Partial scholarships are available for four-week residencies.
Housed in a historic 1916 residence in Santa María la Ribera, Casa Hechale brings accommodation, creative workspaces and artistic exchange together within a cultural centre dedicated to theatre, film and performance. The programme supports artists who need focused time for their work, alongside individual guidance and opportunities to engage with Mexico City's artistic community.
Space to Develop New Work
The residency supports research, experimentation and the development of work in progress: a playwright shaping a new text, a director investigating a staging approach, a performer exploring movement or an interdisciplinary artist working between sound, image and live performance.
Two programme strands—Stage & Performance and Writing & Dramaturgy—provide a framework for independent projects and exchange across disciplines. Applications are welcome from actors, directors, playwrights, dramaturgs, translators, dancers, choreographers, stage and costume designers, filmmakers and interdisciplinary artists whose work connects with the programme's focus.
The centre's Black Box, Front Gallery, rehearsal and reading spaces, and Salon Cha accommodate different stages of the creative process, from individual writing and research to rehearsal, discussion and work-in-progress presentation. Space use and sharing formats are coordinated according to project needs, availability and the centre's programme.
Personal Attention and Artistic Exchange
With up to six Resident Artists per period, Casa Hechale offers a small working community where artists can become familiar with one another's practices while maintaining time for their own projects.
The programme includes:
- On-site accommodation, with private and shared-room options.
- Access to rehearsal, writing and research spaces.
- Orientation and practical support from a Community Manager.
- One-to-one meetings with the creative team and an artistic advisor.
- Weekly activities and introductions to the local artistic community.
- An Open House opportunity to share research or work in progress.
- Residency documentation and communication support.
Through its connection with Hechale Productions, working across Mexico, the United States and Spain, Casa Hechale supports artistic dialogue across languages and cultural contexts. The residency places independent practice within a broader community of artists, with opportunities to exchange perspectives, discuss creative questions and develop relationships beyond the residency period.
Fees and Financial Support
There is no application fee.
The residency is fee-based, with accommodation and programme support included. Fees vary according to the duration of stay and accommodation selected. The complete fee schedule is published on the residency webpage.
