“Flags as cultural objects; historical and contemporary flag-making; site-specific response to an outdoor flagpole and its surrounding landscape”
STNDRD Exhibitions invites artists and cultural producers to submit proposals for its flagship program at the Granite City Art and Design District (GCADD) in Granite City, Illinois. The program centers on a 15' outdoor flagpole, encouraging proposals that explore flags through historical and contemporary contexts—as cultural objects that abstract, encapsulate, and canonize. Artists may respond to the flagpole site, the surrounding landscape designed by landscape architect Chris Carl, or Granite City's identity as a historically white, working-class steel town across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. STNDRD welcomes traditional and experimental flag-making and encourages interpretations of the flagpole itself as a site open to interpretation. Proposals may integrate or rely upon the surrounding grounds. Programs run roughly six to eight weeks; selected proposals join the 2027 program. A modest honorarium offsets material expenses. Shipping, travel, and insurance are not provided, but STNDRD offers installation support, curatorial guidance, documentation, marketing, and promotion.
