In my art and writing, I often think about duality. The two sides of self. Dialectical relationships. The two that exist in any relationship or conversation between two people. This painting emerged to me as two forms, in utero initially, like twins in the womb. My grandmother had twins, my dad being one, and from an early age I had this fascination that I may one day bear twins. They say it skips a generation. My dad's twin did not survive childbirth. I have not had children. Later, the image also emerged to me as lovers, two halves of a whole in life and in love. This is something I relate to. Whispering to each other, in dream as in life, circling through conversation from the personal to the universal. Forever intertwined from that moment of choosing each other, in love and in life. This painting speaks to me of love and life, and also joy. It makes me happy in its vibrancy and colour. In its potency and suggestion of the manifestation of love. Symbolically the twins and lovers speak to the same representation of duality. Our connection with other is a reflection of that with our self, and when in harmony the two selves can rest, peacefully, as one.
This painting is based on the archetype of the twins or lovers, opposites that make up a whole, or the two sides of self or psyche. The two whisper to each other in sleep, an unfurling wave of energetic connection to each other and to all being. Twins, In Utero, or lovers, absorbed in "You" Terra, or the self, asleep, in dialogue with itself. A depiction of joy in oneness. Combining intuitive freestyle painting in a process art approach with washes and dripwork, followed by impressionist style detail that creates movement and story, the artwork is a semi-abstract, expressionist depiction of two lovers. Colour palette is bright and bold, including metallic copper, fluros and lemon yellow. The painting is on stretched canvas, ready to hang.
