Artist Format

Artist-specific formatting.
Not a corporate resume. The format galleries actually want.

Generic resume builders produce corporate formats — objective statements, skills sections, action verbs. Artsume produces the format galleries, grant jurors, and residency programs actually request: exhibitions first, education second, in the correct CAA order.

Exhibition-based format, not corporate
Section order follows CAA guidelines
Date formatting consistent across every section
++
Section Order

CAA section order.
Education, exhibitions, awards — in the right order.

The College Art Association's guidelines define how artist resumes and CVs should be structured. Artsume applies this automatically — you add your entries, it handles the order, formatting, and presentation.

Education, Solo Exhibitions, Group Exhibitions, Awards, Residencies
Most recent entries first within each section
No manual sorting — Artsume orders everything

What to include in your artist resume

What is an artist resume?

An artist resume is a professional document that summarizes an artist's career highlights: exhibitions, awards, education, residencies, and other accomplishments. It follows an arts-specific format that differs significantly from a corporate resume.

Artist resume vs. artist CV: are they the same?

An artist CV is exhaustive and grows throughout your entire career. An artist resume is a condensed version, typically one to two pages, summarizing the highlights most relevant to a specific opportunity. Artsume generates both from the same data.

What format should an artist resume follow?

Artist resumes follow exhibition-based formatting, not corporate. Sections include Education, Solo Exhibitions, Group Exhibitions, Awards & Grants, Residencies, and Publications. This follows College Art Association (CAA) guidelines, the standard format galleries and grant organizations expect.

Should artists use a standard resume or a CV?

It depends on the context. Galleries, grant organizations, and residency programs expect an artist CV or arts-formatted resume, not a corporate one. Employers outside the arts (universities, teaching positions, commercial work) may prefer a traditional resume format. Artsume gives you both.

Common artist resume mistakes

The most common mistakes: using a corporate resume template (wrong format entirely), listing works without exhibition context, putting education at the top without noting MFA or BFA specifics, and not keeping it updated. Artsume eliminates most of these by applying the correct format automatically.

“Having it right there in the wallet to scan is a big deal for artists meeting people at events. It's better than Instagram because they don't have to scroll through everything you've ever done — they see your professional résumé immediately.”
