“Memoir / Literary Journalism / Creative Non-Fiction”
A 12-day self-directed residency at Banff Centre for memoir and creative non-fiction writers. Faculty includes Dionne Brand, Kyo Maclear, Ivan E. Coyote, and guest speaker Simon Thibault (Goose Lane Editions). The program emphasizes thorough reporting, distinctive storytelling, and literary devices for long-form creative non-fiction. Optional elements include one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty, Q&A sessions, and public events. Participants receive a single room, small private studio, and flexible meal plan on the Banff Centre campus. Designed for experienced professionals in creative non-fiction and journalism seeking to complete a long-form piece in a community of artistic peers.

Additional Requirements
One to three-page resume/CV describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience; one-page cover letter explaining interest in program and goals; one to three-page outline of proposed work-in-progress; excerpt from work-in-progress (maximum 10 pages). Financial Aid section in SlideRoom must be completed to be eligible for financial assistance.
Note
Applicants must be experienced professionals active in creative non-fiction and/or journalism, including print or electronic media. Open to non-fiction writers, journalists, freelance critics or curators, artists, and academics who can write for a lay audience. Program is conducted in English and only accepts projects written in English. International applicants are responsible for obtaining a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Banff Centre programs do not meet eligibility for a Canadian Student Visa. Artists from historically underrepresented and equity-deserving groups are especially welcome.
Housing Provided
Single bedroom on Banff Centre campus included in program fee for duration of residency.
Studio Access
Small private studio provided on campus.
Participants chosen by an adjudication panel comprising internal and external assessors. Selection criteria: quality, originality and artistic merit; required skills and experience; potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program; Banff Centre's ability to support the project. Programs are highly competitive with limited places available.
